Installation Guide v.1.4.0 for FirstClass Server 9, 10 and 11
A
Installing FirstMagic

1

Login as Administrator  [the Main Admin account]

2

Create a new message and address it to Batch Admin. Insert the content of one of the two supplied Batch Admin text files into the message:
  • Use BatchAdmin_for_FC9_server.txt if you are installing on an FC9 Server
  • Use BatchAdmin_for_FC11_and_FC10_server.txt if installing on an FC10 or FC11 Server

3

Open the Attach these files folder. Grab all the files inside, and drop them into the unsent message envelope. When the upload is complete, SEND the message to batch admin. Do not attempt to modify the script, or it may break.

B
Cleaning up

1

When the script has run, you have a new conference in /Internet Services/WWW/ named FirstMagicSite. Re-name it to the domain you want to use, and register this in Multi-Site Setup. You will also have a new plugin in the plugins folder, named EnsemblePlugin. Do not rename this one, or FirstMagic will break.

2

Permissions are set for Admin, Owner, and All Users. Modify this to your preferences. Check the following objects:

FirstMagicSite | Content | DigitalSign | Menu | Sidebar
  • Yourself or the website Editor(s)  > Controller
  • All Users >
    Reader
Comments
  • Yourself or the website Editor(s)  > Controller
  • Guest Account > Moderator [if you want to use the built-in commenting system]
  • All Users > Reader

3

If you have an Activation Code, open /FirstMagicSite/FirstMagic and enter it on Tab 1 of this form.

4

You might need to flush the HTTP cache to force IS to recognize your new domain immediately.

5

[Optional]: if your language is not english, you might want to change Client Settings. To do this, upload and distribute your language of choice from the Extras/Client Settings/ folder found in your installer download.

Another way to distribute localized resources, is to give your Web Editors an alias of the FirstMagicSettings container [found in the EnsemblePlugin in /Internet Services/Plugins/; then, each editor can simply click her preferred language there.

C
A note on running FirstMagic in Demo Mode

Until FirstMagic is licensed (by inserting an Activation Code on Tab 1 in FM Preferences), the following features are restricted:
  • The Built-In Commenting mode is inactive
  • The clock on Digital Signs is inactive
... Both these features are unlocked when FirstMagic is licensed.

Installing multiple sites

To add more FirstMagic sites:
Just run the installer again. Note that the installer will always rename any existing "FirstMagicSite" to "OldFirstMagicSite". So, give your installations unique names as you create them.

The second time you run the installer it will finish considerably quicker since the first install will also create the EnsemblePlugin, which is the largest part of FirstMagic.

Never try to run an older version of the installer than you have already used. Always use the latest release available.

System Information

Get a quick readout with information about your installation:
Go to yourdomain.xx/firstmagic?install [Add firstmagic?install to the root URL] to get a condensed report showing FirstMagic version, FC and IS versions, hostname, and some other useful details.
